Bruce A. Smith
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Tesoro Corporation
Bruce Smith joined Tesoro as Chief Financial Officer in 1992, became President of the company’s exploration and production business, and in 1995, was named President and Chief Executive Officer and elected to the Board of Directors. He was named Tesoro’s Chairman in 1996. Mr. Smith provides overall leadership in developing and implementing the strategic direction of the company.
Previously, Mr. Smith was Vice President and Treasurer of Valero Energy Corporation and Vice President and Manager of the International Energy Division for Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago. He also served in the U.S. Army and was a financial analyst at Ford Motor Company. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Westminster College and his master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance from the University of Kansas. He is on the boards of Noble Energy, Inc. and the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association.
John F. Bookout III
Director, McKinsey & Company
John F. Bookout III was elected to Tesoro’s Board of Directors in 2006. He is a Director of McKinsey & Company in their Houston office where he was, until recently, responsible for their global industry practices. Before relocating to Texas in 1995, he spent six years as Managing Partner of its Los Angeles Office and four years in London where he led McKinsey’s European Energy Practice. Bookout also served as Managing Partner of the Texas Office, as co-leader of the Firm’s North American Energy Practice, and as a member of McKinsey’s Shareholders’ Committee. He holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Rice University.
Rodney Frank Chase
Non-Executive Chairman, Petrofac Ltd.
Rodney Frank Chase was elected to Tesoro’s Board of Directors in 2006. He is Non-Executive Chairman of Petrofac Ltd. in Europe and Deputy Chairman of Tesco plc in London. He also serves on the corporate boards of Computer Sciences Corporation and Nalco Company in the USA. Chase spent his 39 year career with BP plc, holding positions in shipping, refining, marketing, distribution, oil trading and gas as well as finance and strategic planning. Chase served on the parent board of BP for 11 years as Director responsible for Refining & Marketing and Exploration & Production. He was Deputy Group CEO from 1999 to 2003. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Liverpool in England.
Robert W. Goldman
Vice President, Finance, World Petroleum Congress
Robert Goldman joined the Tesoro Board of Directors in 2004. He currently is Vice President, Finance for the World Petroleum Congress. Mr. Goldman previously served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Conoco, Inc. He joined Conoco in 1988 as Vice President and Controller. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Kenyon College and master’s degree in business administration from the Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago.
Steven H. Grapstein
Lead Director of Tesoro Corporation
Chief Executive Officer of Kuo Investment Company
Steven Grapstein was elected to Tesoro’s Board of Directors in 1992 and was named Lead Director of the Board in 1997. He has served as Chief Executive Officer of Kuo Investment Company and Subsidiaries since 1992. Previously, he held the position of Vice President of Kuo Investment Company and Subsidiaries, and before that, was a manager with Laventhol & Horwarth. Mr. Grapstein holds a bachelor’s of science degree in business from Brooklyn College.
William J. Johnson
President of JonLoc Inc., a petroleum consulting firm
William Johnson was elected to Tesoro’s Board of Directors in 1996. Previously, he served as President, Chief Operating Officer and Director for Apache Corporation and President, Chief Executive Officer and Director for TEX/CON Oil and Gas Company. During his career, he held various positions with BP Exploration, Standard Oil Production Company and Exxon USA. Mr. Johnson received his bachelor’s degree in petroleum geology and engineering from Mississippi State University and attended the senior management program at the University of Houston. He also serves on the boards of Devon Energy, GX Technology and Browning Oil Company.
J.W. (Jim) Nokes
Retired Executive Vice President, ConocoPhillips
J.W. (Jim) Nokes was appointed to Tesoro’s Board of Directors in 2007. He retired from ConocoPhillips in 2000 as the Executive Vice President of Refining, Marketing, Supply and Transportation for the company’s global downstream business. Previously, he served the company as Vice President and General Manager of Product Marketing, Supply and Transportation. Nokes holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Fort Hays State University in Kansas and a master of business administration from the University of Arkansas.
Donald H. Schmude
Retired Vice President, Texaco; Retired President and Chief Executive Officer, Texaco Refining and Marketing, Inc.
Donald Schmude was elected to Tesoro’s Board of Directors in 1999. He retired from Texaco in 1994 as Vice President and previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer for Texaco Refining and Marketing, Inc. Before joining Texaco, Mr. Schmude served as President and Chief Executive Officer for Star Enterprise. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan. He is a former member of the University of Tulsa’s Board of Trustees.
Michael E. Wiley
Retired Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, Baker Hughes Incorporated,
Michael Wiley was elected to Tesoro’s Board of Directors in 2005. Mr. Wiley has 33 years experience in the energy industry. Most recently he served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Baker Hughes Incorporated, an oilfield services company, from August 2000 until October 2004. He also served as President of Baker Hughes from August 2000 to February 2004. Mr. Wiley was President and Chief Operating Officer of Atlantic Richfield Company, an integrated energy company, from 1998 through May 2000. Prior to 1998, he served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vastar Resources, Inc., an independent oil and gas company.
