Martinez Refinery

A proactive environmental initiative we completed in 2003 at our Golden Eagle refinery was the installation of two state-of-the-art flare gas compressors. This equipment takes flare gases – hydrogen, nitrogen, methane and other hydrocarbons – compresses them and returns them to the refinery for use as fuel. This project reduced flaring by 90 percent, which in turn reduced flare emissions by 94 percent.

Another program that demonstrates respect for the environment and community is Golden Eagle’s environmental scholarship program. Each year, the refinery offers four $1,000 college or vocational school scholarships to local graduating high school seniors and junior college students who have demonstrated a serious interest in environmental issues during the course of their education.

As part of Tesoro’s commitment to have an ongoing dialogue with the community, Golden Eagle also maintains a Community Advisory Panel, comprised of 12 members of the local community who advise the refinery on a wide range of community, environmental and safety issues.
